PC and Network Field Techs (contract - 1099 status)

Hours:
approx 20 hours per week
3
days a week (Tues-Thurs) between 8am and 6pm. 
How this works: You plan on working Tuesday - Thursday, and we let you know by Monday (typically sooner) specifically what your assignments are for those days. 
Hours will definitely increase if you are good at what you do and are willing to accept additional hours on other days. Position may go employee status depending on performance and hours.

Compensation:
$30-$35/hr

Must Have (You must meet all requirements listed below and have worked for a minimum of two years in a professional capacity with all the technology listed.):

  • Advanced Windows XP/Vista (home and pro) desktop troubleshooting skills -- experience in varied business environments
  • POP email client configuration as well as Exchange client configuration (extensive Outlook knowledge a MUST)
  • Must understand how pop email servers function and the common causes of communication issues with email clients (you will not be handling an email server, but you must understand the process in order to troubleshoot client issues)
  • Professional experience with Active Directory, creating accounts, assigning permissions, joining PCs to a domain, transferring profiles
  • Able to configure business class routers, basic networks, VPNs
  • Must understand how DNS and DHCP work and why
  • Strong familiarity with typical business grade DSL and cable modem connectivity issues
  • Configure and troubleshoot both local and network printing
  • Remove viruses, spyware, and adware using common online scans, utilities, and general instructions from sites such as symantec, nai, sophos, etc.
  • Install/configure/troubleshoot Norton Internet Security, Symantec Client Security/Endpoint Protection and other desktop and enterprise level antivirus and personal firewall apps
  • Able to complete full OS installs to individual company spec with little guidance
  • Use Ghost or other similar drive imaging software
  • Configure backups and do restores with BackupExec and ArcServe; must know Windows Backup at an expert level
  • Hardware troubleshooting (fans, power supplies, hard drives, memory)
  • Exceptional documentation skills mandatory (we keep accurate documentation of clients' networks and provide detailed invoices to the clients about work performed -- precision and clarity is imperative)
  • Focus on PROACTIVE support that identifies potential problems before they happen
  • On the spot basic training of end-users on common office applications
  • Technical hand-holding coupled with people skills -- some clients require more tact and guidance from a tech than others. We are the experts and that is why they hire us, but the client should always feel cared for and respected no matter what his/her level of technical knowledge.
  • MCP required.

Strongly desired:

  • Windows Server 2003 SE and SBS install, configure, maintain on server class hardware with RAID 5 config
  • SonicWALL, Netgear, or Cisco firewall experience
  • Experience with SSL VPNs
  • Configure and troubleshoot PDAs (Blackberry, Treo, etc.) and their relationship to PC applications as well as online services
  • A+, MCSE, MCSA, CCNA, CNE
  • Novell Netware experience

Details:
Small IT consulting firm in West LA seeks part time contract (1099) technicians for ongoing business LAN support and desktop support of windows PCs in clients' small offices in the Los Angeles area. $30-$35/hr @ approx 20 hours per week, three days a week (Tues-Thurs) during normal business hours (between 8am and 6pm). A typical day includes solo handling of issues ranging from correcting malfunctioning mice to finding the cause of an intermittently failing business DSL or cable modem connection.

Our firm prides itself on its ability to communicate clearly with clients at any level of technical knowledge, and a successful applicant must demonstrate his/her ability to clearly discuss technical topics with non-technical clients as well as an ability to communicate to his/her supervisor the status of assignments in both written and verbal format in a timely fashion. Must have great deskside manners, strong technical skills, an attention to detail, impeccable ethics, own transportation, own cell phone, and a personal need to do the job right. Must be reliable, have a strong work ethic and a *mature* approach to the job. Must also be a US Citizen with SSN. Technical Certifications are a plus, but emphasis is placed on hands-on experience and good references. Applicant must have strong comprehension of common small office productivity software (complete MS Office suite from XP through 2007, some QuickBooks, ACT!, Acrobat Pro) and must be familiar with common network operations. Small office server and network support experience strongly preferred. Consulting experience also strongly preferred. Two years professional tech support experience mandatory.

Travel:
Client locations range from as far north as Beverly Hills, as far south as Foothill Ranch, and as far east as Montebello. All of our clients are businesses; eighty percent are in offices in business zoned locations, and twenty percent are home offices. Travel time is not included in compensation, however mileage will be compensated at a preset rate. You must be willing to travel to all of our client sites as needed.  This is critically important.  Candidates more than 15 miles from West LA will not be considered if a cover letter does not indicate a recognition of the travel issues.
